October Reds

THE BALTIMORE SUN

In the garden,

red runs through

the month of October.

The dogwood's leaves twist

and turn to scarlet

then curl and fall.

The tree's fruit shines

a bright red, attracting

neighborhood cardinals.

Soon the berries are gone

and the color chain is broken

until an unusual visitor,

a rose breasted grosbeak,

its rose-red patch vivid,

stokes the garden's fire.
