Bids in on 6 St. Paul work

A Bethesda contracting company is the apparent low bidder for a contract to finish the interior of the state's new office building at 6 St. Paul St. in Baltimore, the state Department of General Services said yesterday.

A. S. McGaughan Co. Inc. bid $5.27 million for the job, well below the $9 million department officials had estimated publicly the work might cost. Even the highest bid -- at $6.5 million -- was below that.

Department spokesman Dave Humphrey said the ultimate price might move higher depending on which agencies the state decides to move to 6 St. Paul, because some agencies might need to build more interior walls and doorways than others.

Also, more money might be needed for changes to the building shell, such as a new Baltimore Street entrance. But he said the changes should not be major.

"Is it going to be a drastic difference? Is it going to shoot up to $9 million?" he said. "No."
