Rezoning appeal dropped CENTRAL -- Union Mills * Westminster * Sandymount * Finksburg

Five Carroll residents will not continue their appeal of a commissioners' decision on rezoning a corner of routes 140 and 91 in Finksburg from conservation to business.

Michael G. and Fontini M. Cornias, Arthur C. and Judith G. Risso and Charles Thomas Winebarger Jr. had asked the county to rezone the five-acre parcel.

The commissioners voted against the rezoning because there were steep slopes and wetlands on the parcel. The landowners appealed to Carroll Circuit Court, but dropped their action Sept. 21.

Their attorney, William R. MacDonald of Westminster, said yesterday he had filed the appeal because he could not reach his clients before the appeal deadline. He said he later found out they did not want to pursue an appeal.

Attention shoppers: Don't feed the meters

Motorists will not have to feed parking meters in downtown Westminster from Oct. 18 to Jan. 3, 1994.

The City Council has approved a request from the Westminster Business Association to start the annual holiday free parking early this year. The promotion usually starts around Thanksgiving.

The idea is to counter what the merchants see as adverse publicity associated with the East Main Street reconstruction, Council President Kenneth A. Yowan reported.

The free parking applies to meters on Main Street and in city parking lots.

* Westminster: A Hampstead resident reported to city police that someone stole a radar detector from his car while it was parked at the 140 Village Shopping Center on Monday. The loss is estimated at $110.

A resident of Gorsuch Road told police someone removed $26 from her purse while she was at the Wendy's restaurant in Cranberry Square on Saturday.

* Westminster: An engine from the Westminster station was dispatched to an accident on Route 140 at Sullivan Road at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday when steam, initially thought to be smoke, was seen coming from a vehicle immediately after the collision. No one was injured. The fire equipment was out 14 minutes.
