Methodist Men will serve spaghetti dinner on Oct. 30


In the mood for something Italian? Then try the United Methodist Men's Spaghetti Dinner at Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church on Oct. 30.

The men will be serving spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread, salad bar, cake, coffee, tea and punch from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church, 1239 Murray Road, just off Route 175 in Odenton.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children from 6-12. Youngsters under 6 eat free.

But tickets are limited, and none will be sold after Oct. 27, so you have to hurry if you are interested. To purchase tickets, contact Owen Cooper at 410-674-6145 or Jim Brown at 410-674-2601. Proceeds benefit the Methodist Men's outreach programs.


Odenton Elementary School, at 1290 Odenton Road, will be the site of the first School Readiness Fair from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The fair is designed to help parents prepare their children for school. It will include explanations of various community services and organizations and provide workshops and demonstrations by professionals in the fields of health, education, safety, family support and business.

In addition, the Purple Dinosaur, McGruff the Crime Prevention Dog, Sparky the Fire Prevention Dog and several story tellers will be on hand to entertain the children and pass out handy tips.

Other entertainment will be provided by local performers, including the Arundel High School Jazz Band.

Child care and transportation will be provided.

The Odenton Community Medical Center has scheduled a mixer from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at 8387 Piney Orchard Parkway in the Academy Junction Plaza. Mike Flanagan, former Orioles pitcher and Cy Young award winner, will make a guest appearance.

The center also is planning a health fair from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Academy Junction. Free screening exams will be provided, including blood pressure, weight, vision and hearing screenings. And the Oriole Bird will be around the greet the youngsters.

The O'Malley Senior Center is sponsoring an all-day symposium on Survivor Benefits and Counseling Friday at the center, 1275 Odenton Road, to help senior citizens deal with the loss of a spouse.

The center has invited psychotherapist Katherine Boucher; Ray Van Sweringen, a lawyer; financial planner Roger Thusius, and Pat Arnold, business manager for Hardesty Funeral Homes, Pat Arnold.

The Waugh Chapel Elementary School P.T.A. is sponsoring ... ...TC yard sale and craft fair at 9 a.m. Thursday. Proceeds will be used to purchase computers for the school.


A Parent-to-Parent Workshop has been scheduled from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Crofton Woods Elementary School.

The sessions will be led by Susan Helsel, a counselor at Arundel Senior High School, and Carolyn Foley, a counselor at Crofton Meadows Elementary School.
