Man stabbed in attempt to stop attack on woman

A 26-year-old man who tried to help a woman fend off an attacker yesterday afternoon in the Barclay neighborhood was stabbed in the chest after a brief chase, police said.

James Hall, who lives in the 600 block of East 27th St., was listed in fair condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital with a stab wound near his heart.

Police said a man kicked in the door of a rowhouse in the 2200 block of Barclay St. about 12:20 p.m. and assaulted the woman inside. Mr. Hall, who was visiting, intervened, but the man attacked him with a 12-inch knife, police said.

Mr. Hall ran from the home, but the attacker caught him in the 400 block of E. 22 1/2 St., and stabbed him, police reported. Mr. Hall collapsed around the corner in front of a boarded-up store in the 2200 block of Greenmount Ave.

Kevin Robbins, 29, of the 1400 block of E. Eager St., was charged with assault with intent to murder, possession of a deadly weapon, burglary and assault. Police found the knife in an alley near Barclay Street.
