Cancer Society plans Autumn Golf Classic

The American Cancer Society will sponsor its fifth annual Autumn Golf Classic on Friday at Eisenhower Golf Course in Crownsville.

Registration is at 10 a.m., and the shotgun start is at 1 p.m. The package includes lunch and dinner, a drawing for a gold putter, and trophies for first through third place or a hole-in-one.

The cost is $100 per person, $400 per foursome or $450 for a corporate sponsorship, which includes tee advertising.

Composting program to begin Saturday

Anne Arundel County will begin a neighborhood waste collection and composting program on Saturday.

County trucks will pick up bagged or bundled yard waste every week. Each household will receive an instructional brochure and yard waste stickers.

Golf tournament benefits Sarah's House

Play golf with the Orioles' Jim Poole Oct. 19 at the Queenstown Harbour Golf Links in Queenstown.

Proceeds from the event, sponsored by Visions for America Inc., will benefit Sarah's House, a homeless shelter in Fort Meade. The package includes prizes for first through third place, plus lunch and dinner.

The cost is $100 per person; $400 for a foursome; $450 for a corporate sponsorship, which includes a tee sign; and $100 for a tee sponsorship.

Heart Association plans fund-raiser

The county division of the American Heart Association sponsors its annual gala "Evening Under the Stars" at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Old South Country Club in Lothian.

The fund-raiser includes a silent auction, music, dancing, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

Historical Society seeks book donations

The Ann Arrundell County Historical Society is asking for the donation of good-quality books -- particularly ones about local history, cooking and children -- for use by the county genealogical and historical societies.

Books should be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays at the research center in the Kuethe Library building, 7 Crain Highway S.E., near the Glen Burnie carnival grounds.

Cancer Society needs used cars, trucks

The American Cancer Society seeks donations of used cars and trucks for its Cars For A Cure program.

The Cancer Society handles the paperwork, picks up the vehicles, and arranges to sell them at an auction to benefit its work educating the public, serving patients and finding a cure for cancer.

The donor will receive a receipt for tax purposes.

YWCA appoints board of directors

The YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County has appointed the board of directors for 1993-1994.

Donna Jefferson is president; Kathy Emmert, vice president of program planning; Jean Jackson, vice president of financial development; Meg Anderson, vice president of membership; Patti Bafford, vice president of public relations; Betsy Chomo, vice president of volunteer development; Sarah Ann Parsons, vice president of personnel; Marilyn Lamb, vice president of public policy; Leslie Tilghman, treasurer; and Joyce Kaminkow, secretary.

The new board members are Margaret Clarke, Verna Harrison, Judi Holmes and Sheiala Moscow.
