The Maryland Senior Olympics that start today will be dedicated to a man who was one of the pillars of the games from their inception in 1980.
Beach Schultz, who died at age 72 last February soon after swimming in a meet at UMBC, will be remembered during a ceremony before the start of the swimming events tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Towson State's Burdick Pool. He was an organizer and commissioner as well as a participant.
Schultz, a St. Paul's School graduate, competed as a Masters swimmer at the state, national and international levels. He finished sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke in the 65-69 age group at the World Masters Championships in Australia in 1988 and still holds the Maryland Senior Olympics record in the event.
Active in St. Paul's alumni affairs, including fund-raising and reunions, Schultz was a recipient of the school's distinguished alumnus award.
"Beach always said there were four highlights in his life," said his widow, Betty. "The day he enrolled at St. Paul's, the day he met me, the day he won the swimming medal in Australia and the day he received the St. Paul's distinguished alumnus award."
Kim Morris, the Maryland Senior Olympics aquatics coordinator, developed the plan to honor Schultz. She is one of eight children of Doris and the late Jimmy Russell, all of whom were swimmers or divers. Jimmy, who died in 1983, was a Maryland Scholastics Association diving champion in the 1930s.
More than 1,550 athletes age 55 and older will compete by age group in events ranging from archery to walking today through Saturday.
