Accident causes 55 gallons of truck's hazardous cargo to spill Paint thinner among materials CENTRAL -- Union Mills * Westminster * Sandymount * Finksburg

At least 55 gallons of paint thinners and other hazardous materials spilled yesterday when a tractor-trailer rig snagged a TV cable in the 2800 block of Lawndale Road northeast of Finksburg.

Residents were evacuated from several nearby homes, but officials handling the cleanup said the spilled chemicals caused no major damage.

Emergency officials said that when the top of the tractor-trailer struck the TV cable, the truck came to a sudden stop and toppled several 55-gallon drums inside the trailer. At least three of the drums spilled, and one emptied, officials said.

Fire and rescue units from Reese, Westminster, Gamber and Hampstead, along with Engine 114, a specially equipped hazardous materials unit from Baltimore County, were dispatched to the scene about 1:25 p.m.

Lawndale Road was closed to traffic until after 6 p.m. A spokesman at the Carroll County Office of Emergency Services said a report from the scene of the accident indicated that the road might be blocked for several additional hours while emergency crews moved all of the 5- and 55-gallon containers to get to a drum at the front of the trailer that was believed to be leaking.

The truck, which was transporting flammable and corrosive materials, was headed west on the narrow road when the accident occurred.

Members of the hazardous materials team, dressed in protective clothing, climbed into the rear of the enclosed trailer and determined that at least 55 gallons of liquid had spilled onto the roadway.

The driver of the truck was not injured, state police said.

Two spill response trucks from the Maryland Department of the Environment also responded to classify the materials that were in the trailer and to determine the danger.

Two repair trucks from Prestige Cable arrived to repair the cable but were unable to get to it while the hazardous materials teams moved the containers.
