Bowie breaks hex, ties Va. Union

RICHMOND, Va. -- Marco Griffith's interception with 11 seconds remaining in regulation helped Bowie State (0-4-1) preserve a 7-7 tie with Virginia Union in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game yesterday.

Virginia Union (1-3-1) had reached the Bowie 25 before Griffith intercepted a Roderick Williams pass intended for Paul Macklin. With under a minute left in regulation, Bowie was at the Virginia Union 19, but Bowie State quarterback Darrell Foote was sacked by Ronnie Crump and fumbled. The ball was recovered and returned to Bowie's 46.

Bowie State, which had been outscored, 106-15, in its first four games, allowed only a 24-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Macklin with 2:47 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs tied the game, getting a 2-yard scoring run from Monty Bennett, but that's all the offense managed as Foote was only three of 23 for 53 yards and two interceptions.

Bowie State 0 7 0 0 -- 7

Virginia Union 7 0 0 0 -- 7
