George Mason ends Loyola's streak, 2-1 COLLEGE SOCCER


Tamir Linhart scored the winning goal with 3:15 left, as George Mason (6-4-1) ended the six-game winning streak of No. 20 Loyola (8-2) with a 2-1 victory yesterday in Fairfax, Va.

The winning play began with a corner kick on the right side of the field. Sophomore John Ferrandino made a short pass to freshman Craig Melton, who dribbled along the top of the penalty box before lofting a left-footed shot toward the goal. Linhart dived and headed the ball just inside the right post for his eighth goal.

The Patriots scored first when Rich Kotschau hit a long pass from 35 yards to Ferrandino in the penalty box. Ferrandino headed it back into the middle. Freshman Vincent Marcotrigiano dived and headed the ball just inside the left post at 13:03 for a 1-0 George Mason lead.

Loyola (8-2) tied it at the 30:22 mark when Will Cirrincione gathered in the ball at the top of the penalty box and drilled a shot over Ricardo Leite. Zach Thornton had seven saves in goal for Loyola, but his six-game shutout streak was ended.

* James Madison 4, Towson State 0: Kaaroo Kankkunen scored two goals and Brent Bennett added three assists as James Madison (8-0-1), ranked No. 7 in the nation, shut out visiting Towson State (4-4-0).

* UMBC 5, Georgetown 1: Bobby Wagner scored two goals to lead UMBC (6-1) over host Georgetown (3-5-1).

* Goucher 4, Washington College 1: Dan Jarrett scored two goals to lead Goucher College (3-5) over visiting Washington College.

* Dundalk CC 4, Howard CC 3: Paul Luca scored the go-ahead goal in the second half to lead Dundalk Community College over Howard Community College. Dundalk broke a 1-1 tie in the second half with three goals. Howard outshot Dundalk, 14-9, in the second half. Matt Shifflett and Chris Hammen each scored second-half goals for Dundalk (3-2, 3-4).
