Sylvan Learning files for stock offering

Sylvan Learning Systems Inc., a Columbia-based provider of tutoring and computerized testing services, has filed for an initial public stock offering, company President Douglas Becker said yesterday.

In a filing Tuesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Sylvan said it expects an initial price for its stock of between $11.50 and $13.50 a share for each of the 2 million shares in the offering.

Mr. Becker said one of the purposes of the offering, which the company estimates will bring in about $20.4 million after expenses, will be expansion. Sylvan now operates or franchises almost 500 private tutoring and testing centers.
