Man honored for supporting fishing program
A Cape St. Claire man was honored yesterday during a ceremony at county police headquarters for donating his time and use of his fishing boat to the department's Hooked On Fishing Not Drugs program.
Police Chief Robert P. Russell presented Virgil Buttrum, owner of Buttrum's Sport Fishing in Chesapeake Beach, with a plaque recognizing the hours he gave to the department this summer when he donated his boat the Carol Ann II to the program.
"If he wasn't doing this, he could have been making money," Chief Russell said. "I've never seen a commitment like that before."
About 600 children ranging in ages from 7 to 13 signed up for the program and used Mr. Buttrum's boat to spend an afternoon fishing.
Hooked on Fishing is an extension of the anti-drug DARE program that is taught in county schools.
