EILEEN E. JOHNSON, 56, has served as secretary and vice president of the Carroll County Children's Fund since she joined it eight years ago.
At the annual dinner Monday, she became president of the organization, which helps needy county families meet children's medical expenses.
"The 20 members of the board of directors come from all different areas of the community," she said. "They are all active in the community and able to accomplish things."
Ms. Johnson has been organizing the group's main fund-raiser, its annual dinner, for several years. This year, the event attracted about 350 people and made about $3,000 for the fund. She said the speaker -- best-selling author Tom Clancy -- helped draw a large crowd.
"We more than doubled previous attendances," she said of the dinner Wednesday at Martin's Westminster.
Volunteer's comments: "Of all the volunteer organizations, this is the most gratifying because we can see first-hand how we are helping families in a timely manner. We are small but important."
Volunteer's background: Ms. Johnson works as an education assistant at Carroll County General Hospital. She is married to Marlin Johnson, an engineer at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. The Johnsons have two children and three grandchildren.
