Name: Bertha Dorsey, 78, of Elkridge.
Hobbies and other activities: Mrs. Dorsey has been a volunteer craft instructor for five years at the Elkridge Nutrition Site, in Unity Baptist Church on Montgomery Road. In addition to arts and crafts, she enjoys cooking, knitting, crocheting and gardening. She is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8097, Amaranth and Eastern Star of Pennsylvania.
Organization's Comments: "She is an invaluable craft instructor at the Elkridge Nutrition Site," said Elaine Flemion, nutrition site manager. "She has deep concern for ones who can not master a certain craft and sees to it that everyone takes one home. She is always full of energy and good humor. Her niceness is legendary."
"Her beautiful knitting and needlework of all kinds is top prize any time an auction piece or door prize is needed," Ms. Flemion said.
Volunteer's Comments: "I get great pleasure out of seeing the women complete their projects, and to see the smiles on their faces. It's a challenge to come up with crafts. They have to be small, as some of the ladies live in foster homes where they have little space. Projects include refrigerator magnets and decorative pins to wear.
About Mrs. Dorsey: She was born in Jeannette, Pa., and has lived in Elkridge for 20 years. She retired at age 65 as a supervisor for Chester Uniforms. She and her husband, Edward Dorsey, have a son and a daughter, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
