Severna Park rallies from 13 down, wins 20-13


Host and No. 15 Severna Park (2-0) rallied from a 13-0 first-quarter deficit last night against visiting Thomas Stone (1-1) to win, 20-13, in a non-league game.

Thomas Stone opened the scoring, getting a 24-yard touchdown pass from Adon Hall to Jason Brake. Thomas Stone extended the lead to 13-0 on a 66-yard punt return by Mark Dunn.

But from there, the Falcons' defense tightened and limited Thomas Stone to 66 yards for the remainder of the game.

Bill Erickson put Severna Park on the board with a 1-yard score in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Matt Almes went in from 2 yards, and the extra point gave the Falcons their first lead at 14-13.

Almes rushed for 86 yards and the touchdown. Matt Long closed out the scoring with a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Douglass 24, Northern 10

Felix Jones had 200 total yards and a touchdown yesterday to lead Douglass (1-1, 1-1) over host Northern (0-2, 0-1), in an MSA Gamper 3A Division game.

Jones had 120 yards rushing on five carries, including a 90-yard touchdown, and also had three catches for 80 yards.

Jeremy Turlington completed nine of 13 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown; he also ran for two conversions.

Craig Smith had two touchdowns, one on a 45-yard interception return and one on a 52-yard catch.

Douglass had five interceptions, eight sacks and three fumble recoveries.

Poly 54, Southwestern 6

Senior Greg Kyler scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, helping No. 5 Poly (2-0) defeat visiting Southwestern.

On a Southwestern kickoff return in the second quarter, Greg Jeffers stole the ball from the return man and ran it in for a touchdown, as Poly raced to a 41-0 halftime lead.

City 26, Carver 6

Senior quarterback Teron Matthews completed six of 11 passes for 124 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 1 ranked City (2-0, 2-0) past Carver (0-2, 0-2) in an MSA Gamper 3A Division game. City has won 22 consecutive games.

St. Paul's 41, Tatnall 0

John Solter ran for 136 yards on 10 carries and caught a 19-yard touchdown pass, lifting St. Paul's (2-0) over Tatnall School of Wilmington, Del.

Chris Berrier ran for 70 yards on 12 carries and kicked three extra points for the Crusaders.

Defensive lineman Shawn Bean had 10 tackles.

Lake Clifton 26, Mervo 6

Rickey Matthews rushed for 71 yards on nine carries and had one touchdown to lead host Lake Clifton (2-0, 2-0) over Mervo (0-2, 0-1) in an MSA Gamper 4A Division game. Dennis Harding added a touchdown for the Lakers.

Catonsville 24, Loch Raven 0

Nick Wilkins rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Comets (1-1) past the Raiders (0-2) at Catsonville Community College.

Tight end Mark Stone scored the third Catsonville touchdown on a 29-yard reception.

Stone finished with 10 tackles and 13 assists.

Northeast 39, Spalding 0

Senior running back Todd O'Brien ran 104 yards on 13 carries and scored four touchdowns in Northeast's shutout of visiting Archbishop Spalding.

Fallston 6, Edgewood 0

Brad Thomas' 9-yard pass to Ephraim Dorsey with six minutes left in the second quarter capped a nine-play, 55-yard drive to lift Fallston over Edgewood in a Harford County League game.

Arundel 35, Queen Anne's 0

Sophomore quarterback Pat Cilento scored three touchdowns, as host Arundel (1-1) shut out Queen Anne's (0-2).

Southern 14, Edmondson 13

Timmy Aye passed to Jermaine Johnson for the game-winning two-point conversion with 1:30 left in the first half, as the Bulldogs beat the Redskins (0-2, 0-2) at Swann Park, in an MSA Gamper 4A Division game.

Andre Scott scored on an 82-yard run to bring the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-1) within 13-12. Johnson's conversion reception put the Bulldogs up by one.

Scott led Southern rushers with 130 yards on five carries.

Jamal Morant scored both touchdowns for Edmondson.

Woodlawn 12, Kenwood 7

Alphonso Darby scored the winning touchdown with 2:45 left in regulation to lead the Warriors (2-0) past Kenwood.

Darby intercepted a pass at the 1-yard line with 33 seconds left.
