Epperly takes lead in women's MAGA GOLF

HAYMARKET, Va. -- Chris Epperly, of Virginia Beach, Va., shot a 2-under-par 36-3672, and took a two-stroke lead halfway through the annual women's championship of the Middle Atlantic Golf Association at Evergreen Country Club yesterday.

Epperly, a perennial contender in this event although never better than third, had five birdies and three bogeys over the 5,672-yard, par-74 Prince William County course.

After bogeying the first hole, Sherry Zaleski, from Manassas, Va., and Montclair CC, in the event for the first time, played an 11-hole stretch (Nos. 2 to 13) 3-under-par with her three birdies. Two bogeys coming in dropped her back to even-par 74.

Jenny Chuasiriporn, 16, from Timonium and Hunt Valley GC, was the best of the Baltimore contingent, rallying with three birdies on the back nine for 43-3780. In the past 10 days, she has won American Junior Golf Association tournaments on Cape Cod and at the Port Armor Course on Reynolds Plantation in Georgia.
