A 64-year-old man who gave a stranger a ride in his car was shot three times yesterday by the passenger during a robbery attempt at a Milford Mill-area intersection, Baltimore County police said.
Jerry Spears of the 1000 block of Wedgewood Road in West Baltimore was shot in the right ear, right side of the face and right shoulder. He was in serious but stable condition last night at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Police were looking last night for a gunman who drove off about 4:40 p.m. in Mr. Spears' gray two-door 1985 Chevrolet Cavalier.
Mr. Spears told police that the stranger approached him in the parking lot of a McDonald's restaurant on Liberty Road near the city line and asked for a ride home. The man told Mr. Spears he lived in the Liberty Gardens area of Milford Mill, police said.
Mr. Spears told police he agreed to drive the man home. But when they reached the intersection of Bexhill Road and Vargis Circle, the passenger pointed a small-caliber handgun at Mr. Spears and told him to stop, police said.
After a brief argument, the gunman opened fire inside the car, hitting Mr. Spears three times, police said. Despite his injuries, Mr. Spears fought with the man for control of the gun and eventually wrested it from him, police were told.
The attacker then chased Mr. Spears, retrieved his gun and drove off in the car bearing Maryland license number NXF-151.
The attacker was described as a black male a little over 6 feet tall, weighing about 210 pounds. He had a "flat-top" hairstyle and wore a gray shirt and blue shorts. Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest was asked to call county police at 887-2198.
