Rain washes out some matches Gigi Fernandez, Garrison beaten

NEW YORK -- Rain usually creates more havoc at Wimbledon than at the U.S. Open. But in a year when nary a drop fell at the All England Club, the rain came yesterday at the National Tennis Center.

It was never more than a light shower, but it was enough to postpone play for nearly five hours yesterday afternoon and moved four women's singles match and one mixed doubles match back until today.

Among those who had their matches pushed back were No. 2 seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who was scheduled to play 17-year-old American Chanda Rubin, and No. 3 seed Martina Navratilova, who was to play Barbara Rittner of Germany.

The delay created a nightmare for tournament officials trying to accommodate what had been a record crowd of 22,495.

It was a bad day for American women, too. Gigi Fernandez was crushed by Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-1, 6-1, and Zina Garrison-Jackson was defeated by Natalia Zvereva of Belarus, 6-4, 6-3. Both were third-round matches.

In men's third-round matches completed by early last night, No. 12 seed Thomas Muster of Austria defeated Patrick McEnroe, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. In another match, Sweden's Thomas Enqvist defeated Zimbabwe's Byron Black, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.
