Dewald's 'Devele's' breaks hex Timonium notebook

Charles Dewald, 84, isn't asking for much these days.

All the second-oldest active horse trainer in Maryland wants is little good luck in his life after a summer full of problems.

Dewald began having some of that good fortune yesterday aTimonium Race Course when Devele's Corridor breezed to a seven-length victory over Nun Bee Wiser in the fifth race.

Devele's Corridor, a 3-year-old filly, led all the way for jockeWalter Cullum and Dewald.

After being greeted by 20 well-wishers in the winner's circleDewald said: "My thought was she would be winning at every pole, and she did."

It was the first win in three starts for the filly and a happy day fothe man who has been involved in horse racing for more than 50 years, mostly on a part-time basis.

The Baltimore resident had encountered numerous stretches obad luck with his Pimlico stable of five horses, including three months without a winner.

The latest mishap occurred in the sixth race at Timonium oSunday when his 6-year-old mare Clever Mary got her bit caught under her tongue and finished sixth.

In July, Dewald's wife, Palmina, broke her leg while on vacationand that has kept the trainer busy transporting her for treatment.

No wonder he wasn't enthusiastic about running Devele'Corridor.

But he finally relented at the request of racing secretarGeorganne Hale, who needed entries.

"Georganne is a nice person, and when she asked me a secontime I finally said 'OK,' " said Dewald. "I had just worked [Devele's] at Pimlico and didn't want to hurt her."

When asked what he would do to celebrate the end of his slumpDewald said quietly: "All I want to do is see my luck change."

Dewald said he would keep on training horses "as long as I'able. I can only get out of a horse what is in him. It took me two races to figure out what was wrong with Devele's Corridor."
