Thrift store to be opened by cancer center

A county cancer resource center is opening a thrift shop at its new Pasadena location in September.

CaRES, the Cancer Resource and Support Center Inc., is opening the shop at 855 Ritchie Highway, in Patriot's Plaza.

The new thrift shop will be staffed entirely by volunteers, with all profits supporting the organization, said Executive Director Katherine Smith.

A week ago, the organization raised $3,300 at a crab feast and silent auction attended by more than 100 people.

"We did very well, and the money will go to pay rent at our new location and support our programs," said Ms. Smith.

CaRES, which is dedicated to caring for the psychological and social needs of cancer patients and their families, opened last summer. The organization sponsors free support groups, workshops, educational presentations and social gatherings for cancer patients and their families.

Sky-gazing session planned at park

Larry Brady of the Baltimore Astronomical Society will be the host for a look at the summer skies from 8:30 p.m. to midnight Aug. 14 at Downs Park, at the end of Mountain Road in Pasadena.

The event will include viewings of the Milky Way, the Perseid meteor shower and other celestial happenings. Astronomy enthusiasts are invited to bring their telescopes and star charts. A rain date of Aug. 21 has been set.
