Ford Motor Co. -- Announced that Michael Kranefuss, director of motor sports division, will retire Nov. 1.


Boston Red Sox -- Activated DH-OF Ivan Calderon from the DL. Optioned P Ken Ryan to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Chicago Cubs -- Traded P Paul Assenmacher to the New York Yankees, the Yankees sent former Orioles P John Habyan to the Kansas City Royals, and the Royals sent minor-league OF Karl Rhodes to the Chicago Cubs.

Kansas City Royals -- Signed free-agent P Greg Cadaret, who cleared waivers Thursday after being released by the Cincinnati Reds earlier in the week. Optioned P Enrique Burgos to Triple-A Omaha. Transferred IF Curtis Wilkerson from the 15-day to the 60-day DL.

New York Mets -- Named Ed Lynch special assistant to the executive vice president of baseball operations Joe McIlvaine.

New York Yankees -- Recalled IF-OF Randy Velarde from a rehabilitation assignment at Double-A Albany-Colonie.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Placed P Tommy Greene on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Wednesday, with a strained right groin. Recalled P Tyler Green from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

San Diego Padres -- Outrighted C Bob Geren to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Texas Rangers -- Signed C John Russell. Optioned P Matt Whiteside to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Acquired minor-league P Duff Brumley from the St. Louis Cardinals to complete the deal that sent P Todd Burns to St. Louis on July 22 and will assign Brumley to Double-A Tulsa.


NBA -- Ruled that the Chicago Bulls' newly signed multimillion-dollar contract with Toni Kukoc is invalid, pending a special hearing in mid-August. Commissioner David Stern has rejected the eight-year, $17.6-million deal based on a clause allowing Kukoc to become a restricted free agent after one year.

Houston Rockets -- Announced the completion of the sale of the Houston Rockets Professional Basketball Club Ltd. to LLA Sports Inc., owned by Leslie J. Alexander.


Massachusetts -- Announced that basketball recruit Tyrone Weeks will have to sit out his freshman year after being declared academically ineligible because of low scores on his college entrance tests. Weeks said he still plans to enroll.

Mississippi State -- Suspended DE Timothy Foster from the football team indefinitely after he was arrested on burglary charges in Oktibbeha County, Miss. He allegedly took a pistol and a small amount of cash during a July 2 burglary.

Thomas More -- Announced the resignation of Sharri Brumfield, women's assistant basketball coach, so she can take the same position at Idaho State.


NFL -- Suspended New York Giants OL Eric Moore for the first four regular-season games of the 1993 season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Atlanta Falcons -- Signed NT Moe Gardner to a three-year contract.

Cleveland Browns -- Announced that WR Hassan Jones has changed his mind and will not retire.

Miami Dolphins -- Signed WR Jason McGill. Waived WR Bernard Ford.


Anaheim Mighty Ducks -- Signed free-agent D Scott Chartier.

Boston Bruins -- Signed D Mikhail Tatarinov to a one-year contract.

Buffalo Sabres -- Promoted Gerry Meehan to the new position of executive vice president of sports operations. Announced that coach John Muckler will also assume the duties of general manager.

New York Islanders -- Re-signed free-agent F Brad Dalgarno.

St. Louis Blues -- Agreed to terms with C Tony Hrkac and D Tom Tilley.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Signed free-agent C Denis Savard.
