Beginning today, Maryland's six wagering outlets will take bets on full-card simulcasts from Saratoga and Del Mar, two of the nation's great resort racetracks that open this afternoon.
Maryland's two newest stakes stars are expected to compete in rich events during the two meets. Jacody, owned by Arnold Mekiliesky of Randallstown and Donna Donovan of Baltimore, is expected to take on leading 3-year-old filly Sky Beauty in the $500,000 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 14.
A week later, Bob and Jane Meyerhoff's Valley Crossing will run in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 21. Both horses won important races at Monmouth Park last weekend.
A number of Maryland horses are competing in today's Saratoga's opener. Jumpers from the barns of Charlie Fenwick and Tom Voss, as well as Maryland-bred gelding Norlick, are entered in the first race for hurdlers. Fashion Maven, a winner at Laurel 10 days ago, runs in the featured Schuylerville Stakes. She will be ridden by Stewart Elliott, who won three races on yesterday's Laurel card.
