LANSDOWNE, Va. -- The host team of Mike West-Mike Farewell combined for eight birdies in capturing the Spalding/Middle Atlantic PGA Pro-Assistant championship with a 7-under-par 32-3365 at the 6,800-yard Lansdowne Resort course yesterday.
With his victory in the 30th renewal of the event, West, a former MAPGA assistants champion, joined Larry Ringer and Wheeler Stewart as the only players to win the event as an assistant and as a head professional. As an assistant at Farmington CC in Charlottesville, Va., he and head pro Bobby McIver had won the title at Woodholme CC in 1989.
The Eisenhower Golf Club pairing of Bill Molloy-Dennis Winters placed second in the 80-team field with a bogey-free 67. The leaders:
ROCKVILLE -- Mallory Crosland of the Chevy Chase Club not only whipped the girls' field by 13 shots, but upstaged the 64 boys in the annual Juniors championship of the Maryland State Golf Association at Lakewood Country Club.
Crosland, the second flight winner in last week's Maryland State Women's Amateur, took the overall girls title, and Sheldon Buytenhuys earned the overall boys crown with 38-3573.
Crosland, whose round included four birdies and a bogey against a women's par of 75, is 15, and a junior at the National Cathedral School in Washington. Buytenhuys, from Bethesda CC, highlighted his tour with three back-nine birdies. He is 16, and a junior at Churchill High School.
Among the prize-winners for the girls were Kristin Dollenberg of Baltimore CC, 16-17 champion; and Jessica Fernandez of Sparrows Point CC, overall runner-up, and runner-up in the 14-15 group. The leading boys included Joey Chuasiriporn of Hunt Valley GC, runner-up in the 16-17 division. Chuasiriporn spiced his work with five birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys.
