Wilber Marshall, who left the Washington Redskins to sign a $2.75 million contract with Houston, was the first veteran to report yesterday to the Oilers' training camp.
He rejoined defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan, who also joined the Oilers this season. Marshall played for Ryan as a rookie with the Chicago Bears and said he doesn't mind his coach's reputation for pointed criticism.
* SAINTS: The team agreed to terms with tight end Irv Smith, the second of its two first-round draft choices and the last Saints rookie still unsigned.
"We signed him to a four-year contract with an option year," team spokesman Neal Gulkis said. No other contract terms were disclosed.
* RAMS: Arthroscopic surgery revealed a torn cartilage and a bone chip in running back David Lang's right knee.
Expected to battle first-round pick Jerome Bettis for a job, Lang will miss eight to 12 weeks.
* 49ERS: Running back Ricky Watters, who had been threatening to stay out of camp, signed a two-year contract.
