Kathy Altemus and Sheila Dagucon advanced to today's final of the championship flight of the Maryland State Golf Association's 73rd Women's Amateur Championship at Eagle's Nest.
Altemus (CC of Maryland) defeated Cindy Carlin (Montgomery Village), 1-up, and Dagucon (Montgomery CC) beat two-time finalist Bonnie Fry (Maryland Golf and CC), 2 and 1, in yesterday's semifinal play.
Altemus and Carlin were even after 17 holes, but Altemus parred 18 to win.
Dagucon was 2-up after the front nine, but Fry made par on the 11th to come within one. Dagucon regained her two-stroke lead after she birdied the 13th and held on to win.
Carlin beat medalist and two-time winner Jane Mason (Green Hill Yacht and CC), 1-up, in the morning's quarterfinal match.
April Hardisty (Caroline CC) and Young-Ja Kim (Hobbits Glen GC) reached the finals of the first flight. After leading by as much as 4-up, Hardisty made par on 18 to win, 1-up, over Susan Schuh (Hunt Valley CC).
Hardisty's third shot, a chip 15 feet from the green, put the ball five inches from the cup, setting up an easy par putt.
Kim beat Carole Ratcliffe, 4 and 2, in the quarterfinals and Geri Vartabedian, 2 and 1, in the semifinals. Hardisty needed 20 holes to beat Renee Paugh (Fort Meade GC), 1-up.
