Tourism staff gets calls about elephants, more

Inquiring callers have asked the county Office of Tourism where to find the elephant farm, what time the White House opens and the names of all the hotels in Snydersburg.

The staff located an elephant farm in Northern Virginia and gave an information number in Washington. Although no hotels are available in Snydersburg, visitors can rent a one-bedroom cottage at Cascade Lake on Snydersburg Road.

The office staff considers the calls a sign that people are discovering Carroll. The county might not have elephants or the presidential homestead, but members of the county Tourism Association said at a meeting yesterday that tourists are choosing Carroll County for day trips.

"We are having a good year, with more and more tourists coming here from Washington and Northern Virginia," said Robert Neal, owner of Glenburn Bed and Breakfast at the Tourism Association meeting.

Dottie Freeman, administrative marketing specialist at the Carroll County Farm Museum, reported a record turnout -- about 30,000 people -- for the museum's Old Fashioned Fourth of July celebration.

"For the first time, we ran out of parking," said Ms. Freeman.

The tourism office is working to keep those travelers coming to the county.

"We recently did a show for 20,000 employees of the National Institutes of Health and left 2,000 pieces of information about day trips," said Barbara Beverungen of the Tourism Office to members meeting at Cascade Lake. "Next month, we will be part of a group tour show at Hunt Valley."

The office also is developing a holiday brochure that will tout local events this fall. Tourists will see about 10,000 copies of Carroll holiday happenings at the state's information centers.

Members should send their 1994 event plans to the office.

Visitors don't have to wait for cool weather and the holiday shopping season, said Esther Shriver, director of Union Mills Homestead. They can attend the annual corn roast from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Homestead on Littlestown Pike.
