A man walking home from a church in Pimlico after attending the viewing of his nephew who was shot to death June 10 on Gold Street in West Baltimore was himself slain last night a few blocks from his home.
Pronounced dead in an alley near the 3200 block of Woodland Ave., shortly after 9 p.m. was Dorian Lamont Brown, 25, of the 3400 block of Dupont Ave.
Police said Mr. Brown worked at Wings & Things in the 5200 block of Reisterstown Road.
Homicide detective Donald Ossmus said Mr. Brown, his wife, Zena Maria, 29, and a male friend of the couple had attended the viewing of Mr. Brown's nephew, Michael Tillman, 20, of the 3300 block of St. Ambrose Ave., at the New Fellowship Christian Community Church in the 5200 block of Park Heights Ave. less than an hour earlier. They were walking down the alley when a gunman approached the trio from the rear and fired at least two shots into the victim's head and neck at close range.
Detective Ossmus said Mr. Brown fell face down in the dimly lighted cobblestone alley and died instantly.
As the wife stood frozen in her tracks, the gunman ignored her and fired at least one shot at Mr. Brown's friend, who fled toward the 4900 block of Denmore Ave.
The friend, who police declined to name, was not injured and later returned to the scene, which quickly filled with onlookers.
He said a search of the murder scene resulted in the recovery of at least four shell casings from a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.
"We think the victim, his wife and their friend were followed from the church," said Detective Ossmus, "but we don't have a motive at this time."
Detective Ossmus said the nephew, who was slain Saturday night in the 500 block of Gold St. by an unknown gunman, is to be buried today.
In an unrelated shooting, Shelton Harris, 34, of the 2300 block of McElderry St., is listed in critical condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital after being shot several times by an unknown gunman in the 1300 block of N. Luzerne Ave. last night.
Homicide detective Daniel Boone said Mr. Harris was sitting on the steps of a house at 9:50 p.m. when a gunman approached from behind and began shooting at him with a revolver.
Shot in the legs, chest and head, the victim fell to the street in a pool of blood as his assailant fled.
