Woman sues Columbia Inn WEST COLUMBIA

A Pennsylvania woman has filed suit against the Columbia Inn and a Rouse company that operates it after she fell down a staircase at the hotel in October 1992.

Virginia Watkins of Holmes, Pa., is seeking damages in excess of $10,000 in a suit she filed against the inn and Rouse Hotel Management in Howard Circuit Court July 8.

The suit contends that the inn and the management company are negligent for not providing lighting and warning signs for a staircase that has an "unusual and unforeseeable configuration."

Rouse officials declined to comment on the suit.

Mrs. Watkins, 71, said in the suit that she fell down a staircase while staying at the hotel on Oct. 11, 1992. The suit does not say how far Mrs. Watkins fell.

The woman suffered injuries to her back and knee as well as several cuts and bruises, the suit says. Her medical bills have exceeded $1,400.

Mrs. Watkins has lost $840 in income because she was unable to work at her job at the Secane Outlet in Secane, Pa., for about five weeks because of her injuries, the suit says.

Mrs. Watkins has requested a jury trial for the case, but no proceedings have been scheduled.
