The task force appointed to investigate controversial school changes discussed last night how it will go about its job.
The six-member panel discussed how it will gather information, who will advise the group and how it will come up with recommendations by the county school board's Aug. 10 deadline.
Attorney Sanford Teplitzky will chair the group, which will look specifically at how recent administrative assignments were made and what process was used for moving youngsters with disabilities out of special education schools into neighborhood schools.
Panel members decided not to have a public hearing. Instead, the panel will begin by collecting information already sent to board members, elected officials, and county and state education officials.
Panel member Freeman Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland Baltimore County, said that if the panel could not finish its work by Aug. 10, it would do as much as possible, issue a report and continue its work.
Alan Leberknight, the school board president, said the deadline was set in hopes the board would act on the panel's recommendations before classes begin Sept. 8.
The panel will set up a post office box this week to accept written testimony until July 23 on issues other than reassignments and special education. The next meeting has not been scheduled.
