The New Windsor Town Council voted to amend the penalty residents pay to have water service reconnected after it discovered the town lost money every time someone's water service was terminated.
Mayor Jack A. Gullo Jr. told the council Wednesday that people whose water service was turned off for delinquent bills are charged $30 by the town to restore the service.
But the town pays $20 to have the water turned off and $20 more to have it reconnected, Mr. Gullo said.
"While I don't think we should make a profit on this, I don't think we should be losing money, either," the mayor said.
The council agreed, and voted to amend the ordinance governing the reconnection penalty. The new ordinance will require the resident to pay the amount it costs the town to turn off and restore the service.
Town Attorney Marker J. Lovell will draw up the amended ordinance for adoption at the next meeting.
