Georgia Rittmeyer of Pasadena

Georgia Rittmeyer has been a volunteer for six years with the Hospice of the Chesapeake in Millersville.

In addition to keeping in touch regularly with bereaved families of former Hospice patients, she assists with a Bereaved Children's support group for youngsters ages 10 to 14.

According to Mrs. Rittmeyer, children often are refered to the Hospice by parents, grandparents, guidance counselors and sometimes other siblings. The children meet for five weeks with a trained social worker, and Mrs. Rittmeyer readily admits, "It's hard to not get attached to the children."

Mrs. Rittmeyer says she volunteers at the Hospice "to help others, and in turn it makes you feel you're doing something good for your own self."

Marilyn Coffey, assistant to the bereavement care program, said Mrs. Rittmeyer "quickly proved her capabilities as a Bereavement Volunteer" after she finished her training in 1987.

"She does an outstanding job of timely follow-up, record-keeping, and communicating concern and caring for the bereaved she is assigned to contact," Ms. Coffey said.

For the second consecutive year, Mrs. Rittmeyer will be involved with the Hospice sponsored Camp Nabe, a weekend overnight camp held at the Arlington Echo in Millersville. The weekend event, named for the Korean word for butterfly, is for children ages 6 to 14 who are grieving over the death of someone.

During the weekend stay, Mrs. Rittmeyer and other volunteer counselors are assigned to a small group of children as they lead them through various summer activities and spend time listening and talking with the children about any problems that they are experiencing dealing with the loss of a loved one.

The camp will be held Aug. 20 to Aug. 22. The application deadline is Thursday.

As a result of her training and experiences at the Hospice, Mrs. Rittmeyer hopes that she has become more capable of helping her own two children through some of the more difficult times in life.
