25 Years Ago (Week of June 30-July 6, 1968):

* Carl H. Brendel was named Howard County's first animal control officer. The establishment of this position was deemed necessary because the rapid rate of growth in the county was causing animal problems, such as pet dogs trespassing in neighbors' yards.

* The County Courthouse was broken into and money was taken from the vending machines in the corridor. To prevent a recurrence of the crime, the windows believed to be the point of entry for the thieves were nailed shut.

50 Years Ago (Week of July 4-10, 1943):

* Howard County residents were advised that they would be unable to obtain tick fever serum either from local physicians or from the Health Department. Because the serum was in short supply, it was only available for individual purchases through retail outlets.

Information for this column was compiled by Diane Mullaly from the files of the Howard County Historical Society's library.
