We had heard about the good food and spectacular sunsets at Fager's Island and were pleased that the restaurant lived up to our expectations.
+ We were first seated in the
glass-enclosed addition, which we found cramped and warm. It was no problem, however, when we asked the hostess to move us to a roomier table in the main dining room.
It's an interesting room with crystal chandeliers, hanging plants, a pressed tin ceiling and
windows showcasing the bay.
The atmosphere is lively -- translated, too noisy for a quiet intimate dinner -- but the food makes the trip worthwhile.
We started our meal with a standing shrimp cocktail ($8.50) and barbecued shrimp ($6.75).
What makes this shrimp cocktail different from the norm is that the six shrimp were skewered with chunks of red and green peppers, a cherry tomato and lemon wedge. With its tangy sauce, the dish was a standout
The three barbecued shrimp were good too. They were charbroiled, wrapped in a bacon strip and slathered with a spicy sauce.
We also enjoyed the bread -- a flat loaf with a lightly sweetened glaze.
Dinner entrees include a garden salad with vinaigrette house dressing. The salad is a crispy mix of romaine lettuce, red cabbage, cucumbers, red onions, green peppers and shredded carrots. Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top added some pizazz.
One of our entrees was the broiled salmon fillet, topped with lump Maryland crab and sauce imperial ($24.50). It was perfect with the moist fish enhanced with generous lumps of crab.
We also tried the fillet and crab cake ($23.50). The steak, which was garnished with sliced mushroom caps, was juicy and tender. But I will never forget the incredible crab cake. It was light and fluffy, almost a souffle. This is a strong contender for the best Maryland crab cake.
Dinners also came with crisp-cooked delicate stalks of asparagus and a baked potato.
For dessert, the strawberry mousse ($3.95) was a refreshing end to a good meal.
