Just a few hours after playing even-par on the back nine to finish the suspended first round, Jay Stosz claimed a spot among the overall leaders of the Maryland Amateur Stroke Play championship by dominating the same back nine at Mount Pleasant Golf Course.
Stosz birdied three of the first five holes on the back for a 3-under-par 68 second round and a 36-hole total of even-par 142, giving him a lead when play was halted more than midway through the second round because of thunderstorms.
"The back nine here is supposed to be tough," Stosz said. "I really didn't get into too much trouble."
Stosz's hot final nine came after he had played 20 holes on the day because rain forced suspension of play on Friday.
"It was extremely tough to maintain concentration especially since I woke up at 4:30 and played about eight hours of golf," said Stosz.
The field of 192 will be cut by half for the final round today at par-71, 6,757-yard Mount Pleasant. First prize is $500.
The second round will resume at 7:30 this morning, followed by the final round.
Last year the cut was 158. Although 35 players scored below 75 in the first round, this year's cut should be at 158, tournament officials said.
Like Stosz, Stevon Sutton also finished strong to put him two strokes behind Stosz. Sutton's two birdies on the back nine aided him in a 71 and a total of 2-over 144.
Jamie Young bettered his first-round performance by one stroke with 1-over 72 for 3-over 145. His birdie on the 18th hole placed him three strokes behind Stosz.
Michael Chambers and Van Husson finished their first rounds yesterday morning at 71 to share the opening-round lead with Joe Records.
Chambers struggled in the next round with three bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine. Chambers shot 6-over 77 yesterday for a total of 6-over 148.
Husson parred every hole in the first round, but six bogeys and a double bogey produced a 7-over 149 for the next round.
