Auto racing NASCAR -- Suspended driver Ken Schrader and car owner Joe Hendrick four races after inspectors discovered what they said was an intentional attempt to bypass the car's restrictor plate in the opening round of qualifying for tomorrow's Pepsi 400. Schrader and Hendrick appealed.



All-Star Game -- Jim McKean will be the plate umpire for the game July 13 at Camden Yards. Other umpires from the AL will be Mike Reilly at second base and Dale Scott in left field. NL umpires will be Bob Davidson at first base, Gary Darling at third base and Mark Hirschbeck in right field.

Orioles -- Announced that OF Chito Martinez, who has been with Double-A Bowie since the end of April, will report to Triple-A Rochester today to continue his comeback from a knee injury.


Chicago Cubs -- Optioned P Jim Bullinger to Triple-A Iowa. Announced that P Greg Hibbard will be activated from the DL today.

Cincinnati Reds -- Purchased the contract of C Brian Dorsett from Triple-A Indianapolis. Optioned P Jerry Spradlin to Indianapolis.

Colorado Rockies -- Signed P Jamey Wright.

Florida Marlins -- Outrighted OF Junior Felix to Triple-A Edmonton. Recalled OF Carl Everett from Single-A High Desert.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Activated IF Bill Doran from the DL. Sent IF William Suero to Triple-A New Orleans.

New York Mets -- Signed three draft picks: P Jeff Tam, OF James Dorsey and C Dave Maize.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Fired Rick Cerrone, VP of public relations, and Douglas L. Bureman, senior VP of business operations.

San Diego Padres -- Signed P Terry Clark and assigned him to Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.



Golden State Warriors -- Traded the rights to G Darnell Mee to the Denver Nuggets for the rights to F Josh Grant.

Los Angeles Clippers -- Signed F Danny Manning (22.8 ppg last season) to a one-year contract extension through the 1993-94 season; he will make a reported $3.2 million. Decided not to make a qualifying offer to G Gary Grant, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Sacramento Kings -- Declined to offer F Anthony Bonner a qualifying salary offer.

Utah Jazz -- Tendered a qualifying offer to Corey Crowder, a restricted free agent who last played for the franchise during in 1991-92. Announced that qualifying offers would not be made to reserves Stephen Howard and John Crotty.



Georgia Tech -- LB Alphonso Collins of Thomson, Ga., a prize football recruit, has decided to attend a prep school in Fork Union, Va., after falling one point shy of the qualifying score needed on the American College Test.


Green Bay Packers -- Signed two draft choices: LB Wayne Simmons, their first selection, and QB Mark Brunell. Simmons got a four-year, $3 million contract, including a $1.2 million signing bonus.

Miami Dolphins -- Signed CB Stephen Braggs.

New York Giants -- Signed K Matt Bahr and S Lamar McGriggs.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Signed K Daron Alcorn, a draft choice.



NHL -- Named former president Gil Stein special adviser to the commissioner.

Boston Bruins -- Signed G John Blue to a two-year contract.

Dallas Stars -- Signed F Mike McPhee, F Brent Gilchrist and F Reid Simpson.

New York Islanders -- Announced that coach Al Arbour, 60, will return for next season. He is 745-541-236 overall in an NHL-record 1,522 games.



U.S. Tennis Association -- Announced that a hard-court surface the Olde Providence Racquet Club in Charlotte, N.C., will be the site for the Davis Cup qualifying-round match against the Bahamas on Sept. 24-26.
