College trip to visit Cuba, Puerto Rico

A study tour of Puerto Rico and Cuba in January 1994 is being arranged for students and others by Western Maryland College and Global Exchange, a nonprofit educational organization.

"Caribbean Contrasts: A Study Tour of Cuba and Puerto Rico" will be among the tours available during the college's annual January Term, a monthlong session of classes, internships and programs required for all undergraduates.

The trip is being offered to the public to encourage dialogue between students and people from different walks of life.

During the trip Jan. 3-24, the group will visit cities, towns and rural areas on both islands.

"We want to look at Cuba and Puerto Rico in more than an academic way," said Isabel Valiela, a foreign language lecturer at the college who is co-organizer of the excursion.

The study tour costs $1,855. A limited number of scholarships are available.
