Mendez awarded scholarship by AACC group

Odenton resident Lawrence R. Mendez, a state correctional officer, has been awarded the 1993 Wilson scholarship from the Anne Arundel Community College Alumni and Friends Association.

Mr. Mendez, a 1992 graduate of Anne Arundel Community College, is the fourth recipient of the annual $3,200 award. He plans to complete his bachelor's degree in criminal justice at the University of Baltimore.

A part-time student at the University of Baltimore, Mr. Mendez is a Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services officer.

Chapel to hold baccalaureate services

A church at Fort Meade will hold a baccalaureate service on June 2 to honor the graduating class at Meade Senior High School.

The voluntary, nondenominational ecumenical service will be start at 7 p.m. at the Fort Meade Chapel Center on Grandea Avenue, off Rockenbach Road.

The 1st Army Band will provide music. The public is invited to attend. The PTA will serve refreshments immediately following the service.

Patron robbed outside store

A Prince George's County man was robbed of $50 outside the Starting Gate Liquor store in Laurel Sunday night.

According to the police report, the 30-year-old man was leaving the store in the 3400 block of Fort Meade Road at 6:30 p.m. when two men walked up to him and demanded money. The victim gave the men $50 and they ran into the woods behind the store.

The first robber was described as a black male, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 180 pounds, in his 30s, wearing a striped red and black shirt and blue jeans. No description of the second robber was given.


* Odenton: Burglars broke into an apartment in the 1200 block of E. Scotts Manor Court between noon and 2:45 p.m. Friday and stole a portable stereo valued at $200.
