Boys lacrosse

The top-ranked Saints' junior goalie turned in a pair of outstanding games last week as St. Mary's won its first Maryland Scholastic Association A Conference championship. Brown was superb with 11 saves as the Saints (12-5) stunned then No. 1 ranked (15-4) Loyola, 5-1, in the championship game Friday at UMBC. Brown's 10 saves on Tuesday helped the Saints to an 8-7 win over top-seeded St. Paul's (13-2) to put them in the title game.

Lori Congdon, Chesapeake


Congdon pitched a pair of shutouts as the top-ranked, unbeaten Cougars (20-0) extended the area's longest winning streak (39) by winning the Class 4A, Region IV championship. Congdon struck out 17 and scattered 10 hits to shut out Arundel on Friday by 3-0, and came back with a five-hitter in the 1-0 region finale over Severna Park.


Tim Giles, Arundel

Giles pitched and batted the top-ranked Wildcats (19-1) to the Class 4A, Region IV title. On Friday, the Arundel senior threw a six-hitter with 13 strikeouts and one walk, and delivered a game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Wildcats a 1-0 win over 14th-ranked Chesapeake. Saturday in the Wildcats' 9-1 romp over No. 6 Old Mill for the region title, Giles had a key two-run single in a seven-run fourth inning.

Girls lacrosse

Erin Wylde, Severna Park

Wylde scored three goals as the Falcons rolled to an 18-5 romp over North County (8-7) in the state Class 3A-4A semifinals and got in position to win their fourth consecutive state championship.
