Named Ray Knight bench coach and Bobby Valentine third-base coach. Promoted Jose Cardenal from outfield coach to first-base coach. Traded P Travis Buckley to the Seattle Mariners for 1B Charles "Bubba" Smith.

Detroit Tigers -- Placed P John Doherty on the 15-day DL. Recalled P Buddy Groom from Triple-A Toledo.

Montreal Expos -- Recalled C Tim Laker from Triple-A Ottawa. Optioned C Tim Spehr to Ottawa.

New York Mets -- Purchased the contract of P Paul Gibson from Triple-A Norfolk. Placed P Jeff Kaiser (abrasion of left index finger) on the 15-day DL.

San Diego Padres -- Moved C Anito Encarnacion from Single-A Rancho Cucamonga to Single-A Waterloo.

Texas Rangers -- Sent IF Jeff Huson to Triple-A Oklahoma City on a medical rehabilitation.

St. Paul Saints (Northern League) -- Signed 1B Leon Durham, a .277 hitter during a 10-year major-league career. The Northern League, which opens play next month, is an independent circuit with six teams in the upper Midwest.


Cleveland Cavaliers -- Announced the resignation of coach Lenny Wilkens.

Team USA -- Announced that Duke's Grant Hill (toe surgery) and Purdue's Glenn Robinson chose not to play for a select squad that will play European national teams next month on a four-game tour.


NCAA -- Invalidated the letter of intent signed by Damon Flint and declared him ineligible to play basketball at Ohio State because of improper recruiting practices.

Georgetown -- Announced that Steve Schummer (St. Mary's) has committed to attend the school and play lacrosse. Schummer was an all-Anne Arundel County defensive end in football and received the Greater Baltimore Chapter National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award.

Loyola -- Hired three men's basketball assistants: Jeff Battle, an assistant at Delaware State the past three seasons; Mark Schmidt, an assistant at Penn State for the past two seasons; and Dave Wojcik, 1991 Loyola graduate.

UCLA -- Named Olympic gold medal-winner Jeanette Bolden coach of the women's track and field team, replacing Bob Kersee, who had asked to be reassigned within the sports staff. He will continue as a volunteer assistant, specializing in sprints, hurdles and heptathlon training.


NFL -- Owners approved a new rotation for Super Bowl sites extending into the year 2001. The league said the 1997 game will be in New Orleans, San Diego or Tampa, Fla.; the 1998 game in Atlanta, Houston or Pasadena, Calif.; the 1999 game in Miami, Phoenix or San Francisco. The 2000 Super Bowl will be in one of the cities passed over for the 1997-1999 games and the 2001 game will be in Atlanta, New Orleans or Phoenix. Next year's game is scheduled for Atlanta with the next two in Miami and Phoenix.

Chicago Bears -- Signed WR-KR Curtis Conway, seventh pick in the draft, to a three-year contract.

Green Bay Packers -- Signed WR Anthony Talton.

San Francisco 49ers -- Signed WR Mike Alexander, LB Mike Jarmolowich (Maryland) and RB Steve McGuire.


Hartford Whalers -- Signed D Dan Keczmer, a free agent who played 23 games for the club last season, to a multi-year contract.

Philadelphia Flyers -- Fired coach Bill Dineen, who will remain with the club as a scout. Named Terry Simpson coach.

Pittsburgh Penguins -- Announced that LW Kevin Stevens will need six to eight weeks of total rest to recover from facial injuries suffered May 14.
