Police said yesterday that they know of no suspect or motive in the slaying Wednesday night of two women who had shared a West Baltimore apartment.
Georgia Hill, 49, and Michelle Alston, 31, died at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center within an hour of the 10:38 p.m. incident, police said. Police said Ms. Alston was sitting on the front steps of 1400 W. Saratoga St. when a man shot her once in the chest. The assailant then shot Ms. Hill four times in the upper body as she stood in the hallway leading to the victims' first-floor apartment.
The slayings brought this year's homicide count to 128, 17 more than at this time last year, police said. Last year, 335 people were slain, the most in the city's history.
Also Wednesday, Richard Antoine Lawrence, 20, of the 2600 block of E. Biddle St., who had been sought in two unrelated slayings, turned himself in.
Mr. Lawrence was charged with first-degree murder in the March 14 fatal shooting of Eugene Baker, 38, of the 100 block of N. Aisquith St., police said. A man who was with Mr. Baker was wounded in the incident that occurred near the main post office building in the first block of N. Exeter St.
Police said Mr. Lawrence was also charged with first-degree murder in the Tuesday slaying of 19-year-old James Leon Reynolds of the 700 block of W. Saratoga St. The victim was shot in the head in the 1900 block of E. 28th St. after an argument over a woman, police said.
Homicide detectives said yesterday that they have obtained a warrant charging 16-year-old Kenneth Maurice Smith of the 4500 block of Clareway with first-degree murder in Monday's fatal shooting of 25-year-old Damon A. Toodle of the 4100 block of Coleman Ave. The victim was gunned down in front of a public housing high-rise for senior citizens in the 4300 block of Clareway, police said.
Police have also obtained a warrant charging Carlos Anthony Teixeira, 18, of the 200 block of Colvin St. with first-degree murder in the March 2 slaying of Daniel A. Blue, 29, of the 2200 block of E. Madison St. The incident occurred in the 2200 block of Prentiss Place.
Also, Antoine Williams, 24, of the 1400 block of E. Preston St., has been charged in a warrant with first-degree murder in the Feb. 19 killing of Murphy Worthham, 41, of the 900 block of N. Chapel St., police said.
