Second annual 'Salute' promises a memorable day at the Mall in Columbia

A fashion show, singers, and a variety of exhibitors wil entertain seniors and their families this year at the second annual "Salute to Seniors," Howard County's celebration of senior citizens.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Mall in Columbia as one of many activities in recognition of "Older Americans Month."

The free, daylong program for seniors and their families and friends will feature a presentation of the Senior Citizen of the Year Award to Bernice Hoeper, a deaf senior citizen who established the Hoeper Foundation, which provides support to homebound, chronically ill deaf people.

Lynn Juliano, an event organizer, said she expects several thousand people to attend this year's function.

"We expect over 2,000 definitely. We have had better exposure this year," she said, adding that the day is not just for seniors but for other members of their families as well.

Many of the 80 exhibitors will have information for seniors and their family members on products and services available to them.

"There are a lot of people with family members who are older and a lot of times it's the family who's looking for information for their mothers or aunts. And the entertainment is for everyone," said Diane Perry, another organizer.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for noon on Center Court Stage.

There will be vision, diabetes, dental, hearing and other health screenings provided by the Howard County General Hospital and the county Office on Aging.

Entertainment will be provided by the String Trio, Senior Singers from Heart of Maryland Chorus, magician John Dodge, folk singer Sue Trainor, the Goldenaires, the Florence Bain Singers and the Zim Zemarel band.

Anyone 21 or older will be eligible for more than $1,000 in prizes and special discounts at selected mall stores.

Individuals 60 and older with proper identification can ride free on ColumBus on their normal routes. Free door-to-door transportation for people 55 and older with disabilities will be provided from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by Almost Family and Winter Growth Adult Daycare. Information: 313-7213.
