The 13-14 Harford Sox defeated the Dundalk Padres, 8-3, Monday night in Baltimore Metro League baseball action behind strong pitching from Scott Taylor.

The Sox capped off a three-game winning streak that included a sweep of EDRECO in a doubleheader last weekend.

On Monday, Taylor went the distance on the mound for the Sox, recording 11 strikeouts and three walks. He gave up five hits and three unearned runs.

The Sox went up 4-0 in the second inning. Leadoff batter Dan Gittings walked and Adam Hawkey doubled to start the inning. Singles by Ken Wilson, Dale Berkey and B. J. Casserly brought home four runs.

In the fourth, the Padres countered with three unearned runs, but the Sox rebounded for three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Base hits by Berkey, Larry Hughes and Allan Phillips, followed by a double from Taylor, brought in the three runs.

Hawkey (2-3) tripled in the fifth and scored on an errant throw to first base off a grounder by Matt Linz.

Girls soccer

The Harford United Flash under-14 team (7-0-2) advanced to the finals of the Maryland State Cup Youth Soccer Championship tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Calverton Kickers in Columbia.

The Flash, defending under-13 champions, raced to a 2-0 lead on a header by Shanna Ziegenfuss off a pass from Jenn Cook and an unassisted goal by Sue Gianniccini.

After Ziegenfuss scored again off a pass from Cindy Wolf, the Kickers scored on a late breakaway. Tina Steck had four saves and keeper Katie Bowman stopped a penalty shot to help the Flash.

In Washington Area Girls Soccer League action, the Flash beat the Braddock Road Thunder, 4-0. Jen Coulsen scored on a header off a pass from Lauren Hess three minutes into the game. Cook scored unassisted and Ziegenfuss scored on a pass from Katie Tiburzi for a 3-0 halftime lead.

Haley DeLaurence scored the final goal on a pass from Cook.

Boys soccer

Under-12 -- The Greater Harford Scorpions (4-0-0) scored two second-half goals to defeat Severna Park, 2-0, in Baltimore Beltway League action. Goals were netted by Mike Coughlin and Tim Bowman.

Under-14 -- The Greater Harford Express rallied from a 2-0 first-half deficit to beat The Arsenal of Baltimore, 10-2, in Beltway League action.

Scott Plattenberg scored a hat trick to lead the Express. Jason Reynolds, Jared Guerrera and Steve Nearhood each scored twice, and Brian Shifflet and Timmy Shifflet each scored once.

Track and field

The Harford County Gliders traveled to Sherwood High in Olney last Saturday to compete in this season's third meet.

In the 8-under age group, Adrienne Eckley placed fifth in the long jump (4-2.4), and Drew Westervelt placed fifth in the 400-meter run in 1 minute, 24.19 seconds.

In 9-10 competition, Beth Hulbert finished third place with a 3:04.8 in the 800. Nathan Hopkins finished third in the long jump with 11-5.

Jill Iachei earned fourth in the 800 race walk in 4:51.20, and Megan Sparks was sixth in the long jump (11.5).

Kristin Hulbert ran the 400 in 1:03 for a fourth-place finish in the 13-14 competition.
