Eckenrodes seeking 7th Horney title

Jerry and Todd Eckenrode place a remarkable streak on the line in today's two-man team championship final at Wakefield Valley.

The Eckenrodes, who are not related, are seeking their seventh title in the 36-hole Bill Horney Event.

Prodded by their success on home grounds, the Eckenrodes took a swing at Maryland State honors at Newmarket's West Winds course last week. They finished with a 74, just short of the prize list.

Joe Young is the spring handicap champion at Wakefield. Bob Hoy and Butch Horner tied for second.

Top pros all tied up

There was a three-way tie for top pro honors in the annual PGA Pro-Am tournament at Piney Branch. Tied with 3-under-par 69s were Mike McGinnis of Holly Hills, Dave Laurens of Army-Navy GC and John Huber of Bowie GC.

The amateur sweeps were led by Mike Passon of Old South CC and Skip Masterson of Fredericksburg CC, who carded 73s.

The winning low gross team, with a 138 total, included the Columbia CC foursome of Jack Skilling, Dan Tate, Trask Burton and Dave Bilawa. The leading net foursome, with 123, was John Huber, Pete Bartebedian, Neal Nowotinick and Ken Mattison, all of Bowie GC.

The 69s in the tournament did not threaten the course record at Piney Branch. The record from white markers is 65, set by Joe Max. Record from the blue tees is 66, established by Tim McCoy.

In the Piney Branch Men's Club tourney, the winners were Ralph Lilley and Tony Abetini with a net 63. Bill Hedrick and Allen Fritz combined for a 64.

County championship set

Plans are complete for the Carroll County Championship on Aug. 2. With all play listed at the 27-hole Wakefield course, a change has been made for this year's championship division. For the first time, the title division will be staged over 27 holes instead of 18.

Other divisions, which will remain at 18 holes, include senior men, senior women, men's low gross and men's low net.

Dave Bittner is the overall defending champion. Euritha Bowers was last year's senior women's winner, and Bob Heltibridle set the pace in men's senior play.

Point totals of team captains are Charles Richardson, 13; Pat Lynch, 13; Mike Zezeski, 10; Steve Ross, 10; Bill Jones, 4; and Jeremy Long, 0.

The teams of Verne Williams and Al White, and Joe Amereihn and Don Schuler won Bear Creek's weekly senior league event with net scores of 60.

Dale Peddicord's gross 75 and Jesse Mullins' 80-16-64 net score lead the club's Spring Silver Cup Tournament.

WMC season concludes

A victory in the Division III Middle Atlantic Conference Championship highlighted Western Maryland College's golf season.

Western Maryland trailed by five strokes after 18 holes. Sparking the comeback with a 4-over-par 148 individual total was senior Steve Comes. Other leading WMC scores were Jeff Dierks (152) and Tom Brandt (156).

The Western Maryland team also captured its invitational tournament. Brandt was medalist with a 73.
