Stuhler takes Gene Van Meter Memorial

Westminster's Gary Stuhler won the seventh annual Gene Van Meter Memorial at Potomac Speedway in Budds Creek last Saturday.

Stuhler took the lead in lap 21 of the 40-lap late-model race and held off a late surge by Roy Deese Jr. through the final five laps to take the checkered flag by half of a car length. Ernie Jones of Westminster finished fourth.

The Hagerstown Speedway Driver Report through last weekend's results has Stuhler in third place in the season's point total with a 179.0 year-to-date point average. Hampstead's Charlie Schaeffer is 22nd in the point race.

At 75-80 Dragway last Sunday, Mount Airy's Larry Mayne continued his dominance in the Class I field, winning for the third straight week. Chris Hruska of Mount Airy claimed the Class II competition in his Mustang, defeating Westminster resident Rick Waxter. Hampstead's Norman Wagner won the motorcycle division.

At Winchester (Va.) speedway last Saturday, Schaeffer came from a 12th-place start to finish third in the late-model feature, a race he won the prior weekend.

After taking a sprint heat at Williams Grove Speedway on May 7, Manchester's Jesse Wentz took an early lead in the 25-lap sprint car feature before being forced to the pits with brake problems on lap seven. Cris Eash, a former Woodbine resident, took fifth in the event.
