CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Freshman attackman Tim Whiteley (St. Paul's) scored four goals and had three assists to lead fifth-seed Virginia (10-4) to a 19-9 win over 12th-seeded Notre Dame (11-3) in the first round of the NCAA men's lacrosse tournament yesterday at Klockner Stadium.
Virginia will visit fourth-seed Johns Hopkins (10-3) in a quarterfinal game Saturday at 2 p.m. The Blue Jays beat Virginia, 11-9, at Homewood Field in March.
The Cavaliers took a 7-0 first-quarter lead and held a 12-2 advantage at halftime.
Kevin Pehlke (Calvert Hall) had four goals and an assist for Virginia and Greg Traynor and Ray Kamrath added three goals each.
Notre Dame was led by Randy Colley's three goals and two assists.
The Cavaliers outshot the Fighting Irish, 52-36, and were successful on 25 of 26 clears.
Notre Dame was the last non-eastern to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Starting next year, a non-eastern team will play an at-large team to qualify for the 12th seed.
