Baltimore trio wins grant to play abroad

The Baltimore musical trio Helicon is among 50 groups in the nation to receive a grant to participate in an arts project in a different country, the National Endowment for the Arts has announced.

Helicon will receive $2,400 to provide musical performances at the Third International Hackbrett Festival in Munich, Germany, this November. The trio consists of Ken Kolodner (hammer dulcimer and fiddle), Chris Norman (wooden flutes) and Robin Bullock (guitar, cittern and fiddle). They will perform in concert with 24 other hammer dulcimer groups from around the world. This money comes from a partnership between the endowment and Arts International.

This year grants were given to arts projects in 34 countries. These awards allow U.S. artists to explore other cultures and to share their experiences with their local communities. The endowment's international program distributes the grants under three categories: The Fund for U.S. Artists at International Festivals and Exhibitions, Travel Grants Fund for Artists and the U.S.-Mexico Creative Artists' Residencies.
