Severna Park takes county title Tennis


Severna Park (34 points) took one first-place and three second-place finishes en route to the Anne Arundel County tennis title at Chesapeake High School yesterday. Arundel finished second with 30 points.

The Falcons placed first and second in girls doubles, as Sarah Keller and Jenny Weitz beat Tricia Cornelious and Sarah Weust in straight sets. In boys doubles, Andrew Carlson and Jason Kesselman (Arundel) beat Joe Laidley and Andy Smith (Severna Park), also in straight sets.

In singles, Jay Kimmel (Chesapeake) swept Ben Rawitt (Severna Park) for the boys title and Meghan Cornwall (Annapolis) swept Jen Beers (Arundel) for the girls championship.

Mixed doubles was won by Arundel's Matt Durose and Nealy Harris, who beat Chesapeake's Eric Barger and Terri Long.

* C. Milton Wright (15 points) captured the Harford County Tennis Championships at Harford Community College. Fallston (12 points) placed second.

In mixed doubles, Katie Johnson and Saul Passe beat Pam Craig and Mike Clark (Havre de Grace), 6-3, 6-1. In girls doubles, Katie Hatton and Erin Updegrove defeated teammates Susan Renner and Kate Corea, 6-4, 6-1.

In singles, Jeff Roux (Bel Air) defeated Tim Bystry (Fallston), 6-2, 6-3, for the boys title and Suzie Samuel (Bel Air) defeated Heather Swearingen (Havre de Grace), 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 for the girls title.

In boys doubles, Ryan Hannon and Greg Lemoine (Fallston) defeated Dave Burns and Jim Penski (Fallston), 6-2, 6-3.
