Westminster woman injured on Route 29

A Westminster woman was seriously injured yesterday in a two-car collision after she tried to make a left turn on U.S. Route 29 in Columbia in front of a Ford Thunderbird, county police said.

Joan Niner, 40, was taken by ambulance to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she is listed in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The Thunderbird's driver, Stephen Thompson, 29, of the 9300 block of Matador Road, was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released, said police Officer Kevin Gavin.

The collision occurred about 1 p.m. yesterday at Route 29 and South Entrance Road, he said. Ms. Niner was in the right lane in her Mercury Sable heading south when she tried to turn left into a closed cut-around to head north on Route 29, Officer Gavin said.

Her car crossed the path of the Thunderbird heading south, Officer Gavin said.

Police said an investigation continues and charges are pending.
