Kuykendall's ship awarded for efforts to aid environment
Navy Ensign Scott D. Kuykendall is serving aboard the destroyer USS O'Bannon, which was recently awarded the Secretary of the Navy's 1993 Environmental Quality Award for Small Ships.
In the home port of Charleston, S.C., the ship and its crew were honored for their environmental program during 1991 and 1992.
The program included such diverse activities as conducting at-sea refueling with the navies of Northern European countries or cleaning up the roadside of Highway 52 near Ladson, S.C.
The award was based on the ship's hazardous materialminimization program, plastics-at-sea awareness, fuel management afloat, oil spill prevention and recycling efforts.
Ensign Kuykendall is a 1988 graduate of South Carroll High School in Winfield.
His wife, Melissa, is the daughter of Ronald H. and Diane P. Lowe of Mount Airy.
Ensign Kuykendall joined the Navy in May 1992.
