Aretha Franklin stands by her furs

Aretha Franklin is not ashamed to wear fur. The Queen of Soul has been criticized by animal-rights groups since she showed up at the Clinton inauguration festivities in a Russian sable coat. On May 1, while in concert at Radio City Music Hall, Ms. Franklin showed up in a long, long white mink stole. "Aretha often gets cold on stage," a publicist for Arista records said.

Writing is found at 4,200-year-old site

Chinese archaeologists working in eastern China have discovered inscriptions on a 4,200-year-old piece of pottery that suggest the Chinese writing system is 1,000 years older than previously believed, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Engraved on the piece of pottery are at least 11 characters unlike any identified in Chinese writing systems so far.
